Resisting the Urge to Fix: Motivational Interviewing for Lactation Consultants

Opportunity Overview

October 27, 2020 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm

This is a virtual event.

The process of learning how to breastfeed can be incredibly harrowing for new, and not so new, mothers alike. The process can become that much more fraught and even adversarial if lactation consultants educate in a manner that unintentionally, or otherwise, appears to come from a desire “to fix” problems. Seeking to chart a more productive course of learning, Karolina Ochoa, BSN, IBCLC, will educate attendees on the following objectives:

· Identifying Strategies of Motivational Interviewing

· Reviewing the four processes of Motivational Interviewing: Engaging, Focusing, Evoking, Planning

· Discovering how to replace the traditional approach of “advice-giving” with “reflective listening”

· Evaluating personal skills and usefulness of Motivational Interviewing in Lactation Practice

Per the Inland Imaging Breastfeeding Coalition, “during this fascinating course designed specifically for Lactation Professionals in all clinical settings, you will explore the basics of Motivational Interviewing, master the powerful tools to enhance your patient communication, learn how to replace traditional approach of “advice giving” with “reflective listening” and in effect, greatly improve your patient outcomes.”
